The Fostering Network in Scotland have consulted with young people across the country and encourage the active participation of young people in all aspects of our work to improve standards in foster care and outcomes for all young people involved. This work is necessary because:

  • it is estimated that up to 40,000 children in the UK under 18 are in foster care
  • twenty per cent of care leavers present as homeless
  • poor educational and employment outcomes are common among care leavers
  • there is a lack of consultation with young people involved in foster care.

This work with children and young people, both looked after in foster care and the sons and daughters of foster carers, has enabled young people to voice their experiences of foster care.

Forgotten Voices: thoughts, ideas and feelings

In 2008, the young people's project launched its unique collection of thoughts, views and feelings of young people with direct experience of foster care. These were put together in a report and three videos were also produced, available to watch below or on DVD which you can buy from our Scotland office. Order by phone on 0141 204 1400 or email scotland@fostering.net. DVDs cost £23.50 plus VAT, plus £1.50 p&p.
