The Fostering Network knows that many children in foster care do not have the books they need or the opportunity to enjoy reading with adults. Heavy demands are placed on foster carers, who can find it difficult to make time to read with the children in their care.
To address these difficulties the Fostering Network was awarded a grant by the Roald Dahl Foundation to undertake an exciting new literacy project, Telling My Story.
As we reach the end of this project, we have produced a factsheet, Improving the literacy of children who are looked after: tips for foster carers, to help foster carers promote reading to children and young people.
A series of downloadable Roald Dahl certificates to encourage fostered children to read books and write their own stories will become available in the near future.
More information about literacy can be found in the Foster Care Resource Centre.
This competition to complete a story about Tracy Beaker has had a great response with a large number of entries coming from all over the UK.
Finalists will be invited to London to meet Jacqueline Wilson and the winning stories will be published by the Fostering Network. The successful storytellers will be notified at the beginning of March.
We have been holding storytelling events across the UK providing foster carers, fostered children and sons and daughters of foster carers with the opportunity to talk to a children's author, get involved in storytelling workshops and gain skills in teaching or learning to read. Five events have now been held and you can read a review of some of the events below
Telling My Story has been generously funded by the Roald Dahl Foundation.
