There are 50,000 children in foster care on any given day in the UK. More foster carers are needed to provide these children with safe and caring homes while they are unable to live with their own families. Currently, there is a shortage of over 10,000 foster carers in the UK.
Foster Care Fortnight is an annual campaign which raises the profile of fostering and highlights the need for more foster carers, co-ordinated by the Fostering Network. It is the ideal time for anyone considering fostering to get in touch with their local fostering service. Find your local fostering service.
Foster Care Fortnight 2008 will run from 12-25 May. Visit the dedicated campaign website, www.couldyoufoster.org.uk, where further information will be posted as soon as it becomes available.
In 2007, 27 foster families from around the UK shared their experiences in a new promotional film about fostering and leant their support throughout Foster Care Fortnight. Download more information on the Faces of Foster Care DVD, and details of how to order.
Fostering service members of the Fostering Network can download a toolkit to help make the most of the recruitment opportunities offered by Foster Care Fortnight.
The Fostering Network would like all fostering services to identify their recruitment target for 2008-09 and highlight any specific shortages being experienced. We would be very grateful if you could take the time to complete a short survey.
We are keen to collect this figure as we think it will help us focus attention on both the need for foster carers and the enormous ongoing challenge for fostering services in ensuring there are sufficient numbers of foster carers available. Find out more and complete survey.
