Delegated responsibility

The Fostering Network has been funded by the Department for Children, Schools and Families to manage a two year project supporting changes in practice around delegated responsibility. The project runs until April 2011.

Care Matters - Time for Change outlined the importance placed by the Government on foster carers being able to take a greater range of decisions and being able to give written consent for day to day aspects of the lives of the of the young people they care for.

Children and young people say that this is important to them as the current arrangements make them feel different from other children and also that trips and other opportunities are sometimes missed due to delays in getting the necessary consents from managers of children’s services.

The project will:

  • research the perspectives of those most closely concerned with the lives and care plans of young people, and
  • produce information, tools and training to assist local authorities in their decision making around delegation of responsibility.

Findings will be disseminated across England in 2011.

In addition to face to face meetings with young people, foster carers, parents, social workers and IROs, the Fostering Network is inviting these groups to give their views about this important change in culture and practice using the questionnaires below.
