Leading fostering charity awarded grant from the big lottery fund to help young people in foster care

17 January 2007
Leading fostering charity, the Fostering Network has today (Wednesday 17 January) been awarded a grant of £863,659 from the Big Lottery Fund to support a project that gives care experienced young people a 'voice' in society. Leading our Lives, a three-year project, will enable young people to influence the development of fostering services in the future.

Care experienced young people will have an active voice in society through the creation of a national young people's committee, enabling them to influence the national work of the Fostering Network and wider fostering services. Young people will also have the opportunity to take part in regional forums, informing regional and local policies and practices.

Ena Fry, children and young people's development worker, the Fostering Network said: "At the Fostering Network we believe that children and young people have a right to be heard and to take part in decision making. This grant is confirmation of the importance of this.

"I am delighted we are now able to involve care experienced young people in the everyday practices and policies of fostering. With dedicated training and support the money we have been awarded will enable young people to participate in social care inspections, foster panels, media presentations and lobbying work."

James, a care-experienced young person said: "I think the project sounds like a brilliant idea, far too often young people in foster care are not listened to and don't have a say on key issues. As we have experienced the care system first hand, surely we are the best people to consult with when it comes to what does and doesn't work."

The Fostering Network is the UK's leading charity for all those involved in fostering, and exists to ensure that all fostered children receive the highest standards of care.
