Foster carers honoured at national awards ceremony

12 July 2007

The Believe in Me Awards ceremony for adults working with children and young people in care will be held today (12 July) in central London. BBC’s Emily Maitlis will be presenting the awards ceremony and a host of other stars including Melinda Messenger and Dr Tanya Byron will be in attendance.

The awards reflect how adults working in the care system can have a positive impact on a young person’s life, by supporting and encouraging their talents and interests.

The twenty winners were selected from over seven hundred nominations and include foster carers, leaving care workers, mentors and teachers.

Samantha, 17, nominating foster carer, Keith Hunt said: "Keith Hunt means the world to me. He has helped me shape my future and made me see opportunities I never thought were mine. I thought I would never go to university but he has helped me realise I have as much chance of going as the next person."

Quyen 17, nominating foster carer Margaret Pursey said: "Margaret is always there for me whether I am happy or sad. One time I got an award and I saw the look on Margaret’s face. Every success of mine is a success for Margaret because if she wasn’t there, encouraging me and assuring me, I wouldn’t have achieved anything."

Children and Families Minister, Kevin Brennan MP, who will be presenting the award to the overall winner of the Believe in Me Awards 2007, said: "I congratulate all those people who are winning awards at this ceremony, but would also commend those who were nominated. What makes these awards particularly special is that the young people themselves have nominated people who have really made a difference to their lives. Children in care deserve the security and support they need to reach their full potential – these people are helping them do just that. They are an inspiration."
