The following criteria are based on the draft minimum standards
for foster care services and the Fostering Network competencies for
foster carers.
The nominated foster carer needs to have a minimum of three
years fostering experience and it must be shown how the foster
carer has gone the extra mile and how they meet at least three of
the criteria below:
- makes a positive impact on the life of the child(ren)
- promotes children’s identity
- makes a child feel part of the family
- listens and talks to children in an age appropriate manner
- celebrates achievements of children
- has a positive influence on personal education
- seeks and respects the opinions of children
- provides a good standard of care, promoting healthy, emotional,
physical and sexual development
- promotes health and educational achievement
- works closely with children’s families and others who are
important to the child
- sets appropriate boundaries and manages behaviour within the
boundaries, without the use of physical and inappropriate
punishment
- assists with the development of skills and competencies for
adult living
- advises children on how to keep themselves safe from harm or
abuse and to how to seek help if their safety is threatened.
- promotes equality, diversity and rights of individuals and
groups within society.

the Fostering Network are ineligible.
