Barnardo’s Scotland Adoption seeks to find adoptive families primarily for single children and sibling groups who are over 3 years of age.

All of the children that we place for adoption are ‘looked after’ (in care) by a local authority and we work in partnership with local authorities nationwide.

Specialist services include:

  • The service will provide support to families before and after children have been placed.
  • Group meetings are available for those who are going through assessment, those waiting for a placement and for families who have already adopted.
  • Meetings are led by experienced Barnardo’s social work staff and/or an adopter.
  • We host children’s and young people’s events including summer activities for children, picnics and seasonal parties for children and adults.
  • A range of therapeutic counselling and psychotherapy services are available for those who adopt through Barnardo’s.
  • Please contact us for further information.

East Lothian is a relatively small local authority. We currently support around 70 foster carers and 40 short-breaks carers. We are committed to recruiting local carers for our children and to providing support to our carers at a local level. Our team of Community Resource Social Workers and Family Support Workers build close working relationships with our foster carer colleagues, who are considered very much part of the care team around our most vulnerable children. East Lothian's foster carers are entitled to 3 weeks paid time out annually (6 weeks for level 3 carers) and are paid up to 12 weeks retainer fee annually, once the child leaves, if no other child is available for placement. The Community Resources Team provide a rolling programme of training and learning opportunities for foster carers, supported by East Lothian's Workforce and Carer Development staff. We are particularly interested in carers able to look after brothers and sisters, teenagers and children of primary school age. We also need carers able to offer support to children with disabilities. East Lothian's Community Resources can be contacted by email at the above address or to speak to a social worker contact the duty social worker on 01620827643. The duty phone is open Monday - Friday 9.00 - 5.00. We are open to enquiries throughout the year and can offer an office or home visit to discuss whether fostering is right for your family.

We are recruiting carers for all age groups 0-18.  This includes:

    • Short term foster carers (looking after children temporarily from a few days to a couple of years).
    • Respite carers (provides short term relief for familes)
    • Permanent foster carers (where children remain in the care of the foster carers until they reach adulthood)
    • Enhanced foster carers (for children aged 12 and over who have been significantly affected by the diffficulties in their lives)
    • Intensive foster carers (look after our most vulnerable and challenging children/young people where carers with significant experience provide a stable and safe environment.)
    • We recruit carers from all walks of life and with different experiences of caring for children whether that be caring for their own children or if they have worked in the field of child care.
    • We take care to ensure that children are placed with carers who have the right experience and environment for them.

We give all of our foster carers a high level of support and training is ongoing.  Carers are assigned their own support worker who will be able to offer support and advice through regular visits and telephone contact.  We link new carers in with an experienced foster carer who can provide informal support.  There are also opportunities to meet other carers at our regular training sessions.

We pay up to £580 per week per child and we provide financial support to get you started.
