Taking a child in to your home is a life changing experience. You will face new challenges and you may feel overwhelmed and quite nervous in the first stages of fostering. But here in Barnet, and across the UK in fact, most foster carers will tell you that it’s the best job in the world.

There’s a real sense of achievement in knowing you’ve been there for a child who needs your help – and foster carers tell us they love seeing how children blossom once they realise they’re accepted and feel secure in their home.

We will support you every step of the way. First, by giving you an accurate idea of what you can expect. Then, if you go ahead and foster, by introducing you to a wide range of people you can count on for help and advice. And finally as a Barnet foster carer you will receive generous allowances and fees for all your hard work.

If you would like to find out more about fostering for Barnet please give us call or why not come along to one of our information events, details are on our website.

Foster carers look after other people's children in their own home, either short or long term and your help can really make the difference to a child’s life. Foster children want the same things in life as other children: safety, attention, laughs and a happy family and you can help them have this.

There are many myths about foster carers such as they must be married or own a large house. Islington foster carers in fact come from many different cultures and backgrounds and may be couples or single people, with or without their own children living in owned or rented accommodation.

You don’t need qualifications but you do need to be good with children and young people, be able to keep them healthy and safe and to help them make good progress at school. This also means you must have a good standard of both spoken and written English.

As well as the satisfaction of helping a child you will also receive generous financial allowances to help with their care and of course Islington foster carers get full training and 24-hour support.
