Leaving care

The Children (Leaving Care) Act 2000 places specific duties on fostering services and their role in ensuring that young people leaving care make a smooth transition to adult life. These duties include advising and assisting their needs appointing personal advisers and drawing up written plans (Pathway Plans) for every young person leaving care.

The Fostering Network offers handbooks designed to help young people leaving care to understand the responsibilities of adulthood. We have also developed a practical guide to assist anyone involved in preparing care leavers for adult life.
