The sons and daughters of carers have an important part to play in fostering, and often break the ice, and act as a listening ear, for the fostered children entering their homes. Yet this group of young people has long been neglected within fostering. Research shows that they often feel overburdened and unsupported, and are unable to share their concerns with their parents.
The Fostering Network Northern Ireland has been offering support and advice to the sons and daughters of foster carers since January 2003. It provides opportunities for young people whose parents foster to talk about their experiences of fostering, both good and bad. The project offers face-to-face or telephone support, together with group meetings.
The scheme provides the support required through the work of home-based sessional peer mentors. Each mentor has responsibility for a different part of Northern Ireland and is able to travel to meet with young people within their specific area.
The Youth Council for Northern Ireland has funded the work of the mentors and the costs associated with recruitment, training, and expenses for a period of three years. Additional funding has been received from Lloyds TSB.
