About this course

For many social workers, training foster carers and foster care applicants is a significant part of their job. Many experienced carers are also involved in delivering training. It is considered good practice by most fostering services for foster carers and social workers to combine their skills and experience and conduct training sessions together.

Delivering training does not always come naturally. This course will help those responsible for running in-house preparation sessions for new applicants, regardless of their level of experience. Even those who have run sessions in the past will benefit by learning new training techniques.

This course will enable participants to:

  • become more familiar with the Fostering Network’s latest applicant training pack, The Skills to Foster and its links to competency based assessments of prospective carers
  • practise the skills needed to lead preparation programmes for new applicants
  • learn how to use The Skills to Foster to run effective in-house preparation sessions
  • experience working in partnership with others by planning, preparing and delivering presentation
  • observe and evaluate sessions presented by other course participants
  • evaluate your own preparation, presentation and co-working
  • identify the skills you already possess and those you may need to develop further.
