About this course

The UK National Standards for Foster Care and the Code of Practice recommend that fostering services make explicit the skills and competencies required by carers. Section 3.2 of the Code of Practice also states that:

"Whoever is responsible for, or involved in, the assessment should have received training on the assessment process"

This course will help fostering services implement the competency-based approach to assessing foster carers, and firmly places the process within a framework of equal opportunities and anti-discriminatory practice.

Course materials

The cost of this course includes a complete pack of the Fostering Network’s competency-based Assessment materials.

This course will enable participants to:

  • review and refresh a range of assessment methods
  • begin to understand the use of competencies in assessment
  • develop their practice in the context of the Code of Practice, UK National/ National Minimum Standards and the Fostering Services Regulations
  • become more familiar with the Fostering Network’s assessment toolkit
  • identify ways to evidence whether applicants can care for children and young people safely.

Links to qualifications

The course links up to units HSC31, HSC33 and HSC36 of the NVQ Health and Social Care Level 3 ‘Caring for Children and Young People’ and units D and E of the National Occupational Standards for Child Care at post qualifying level.
