About this course

The Children (Leaving Care) Act 2000 places specific duties on fostering services and their role in ensuring that young people leaving care make a smooth transition to adult life. UK National Standard 12 recommends that:

"Each child or young person in foster care is helped to develop the skills, competence and knowledge necessary for adult living; she or he receives appropriate support and guidance for as long as necessary"

It also recommends that all foster carers receive training and support to help them support young people.

This course will enable participants to:

  • identify expertise needed to empower young people as they become adults, within a framework of anti-discriminatory practice
  • explore ways of equipping young people with the range of skills they need consider the particular roles and responsibilities of all members of the fostering team, including foster carers, and identify the skills and experience they bring to this work
  • apply up-to-date information from latest legislation address the stigma of public care and how to provide care leavers with the same opportunities as their peers.
