foster carers.

About this course

The Fostering Network is launching the Pathways Through Fostering series of publications and training courses this year. The topics have been selected to reflect what agencies and foster carers have told us they believe should be core post-approval training for all carers and we are leading on the development of a post-approval training curriculum.

All foster carers need to have an understanding of attachment theory to help them effectively manage some of the challenges and difficulties that insecurely attached children can bring to their placements.

The aim of this course is to support foster carers in developing a good understanding of how children with insecure attachments can have different expectations of caring relationships to securely attached children, and the impact this has on their behaviours in placement.

This course will enable participants to:

  • explore how secure attachments are made
  • consider and explore the impact of trauma and abuse on children’s abilities to develop secure attachments
  • consider the attachment styles of poorly attached children
  • consider practical strategies to help and support children with poor attachments and mange their behaviour.

Underpinning Knowledge for NVQ and PQ

This course contributes to the underpinning knowledge for:

  • NVQ Level 3 units 31; 33; 34, 36, 37, 38 & 39
  • PQ units A; B & E.
