Men and Foster Care

28 June 2008, Bay Chambers, Cardiff Bay

This course is for:

men only and is facilitated by a male foster carer.

About this course:

The role of men in foster care and residential care is the subject of ongoing debate. There can be concern about how best to work with children who have been sexually abused, worries about abuse by carers and unsubstantiated allegation of abuse in foster care.

This course explores the idea of the “positive male role model” to identify ways in which men can be more effective carers. It addresses some of the more complex aspects of foster care such as caring for children who have been sexually abused and unsubstantiated allegations of abuse in foster care.

This course will enable participants to:

  • examine how gender influences child care work
  • identify the role of men in work with children who have been sexually abused
  • clarify why sexism must be challenged and how to do this effectively
  • challenge the myths and stereotypes surrounding black men and gay men, promoting anti-discriminatory practice

Qualification units:

  • NVQ Level 3 unit 33
  • PQ units A & E.
