Miriam Bennett, a foster carer from Bridlington, has won the highly prestigious accolade of ITV Carer of the Year, which was announced as part of the Daily Mirror’s Pride of Britain Awards 2007.
Miriam, 57, is a remarkable carer who renovated a derelict bed and breakfast in order to be make room for more children. She and her husband Vic, 59, moved there after 20 years in their Leeds home, as it was the only way they could afford a bigger property. Over the years she has looked after over 300 children and at the moment is caring for 10, two of whom have cystic fibrosis and another two have cerebral palsy.
After being crowned as the winner of the regional
Yorkshire heats, Miriam then went on to win the national title
beating 15 other regional finalists saying:
"It's a bit overwhelming. We've had a wonderful day, I feel humbled to have won the award among so many great people. I want to encourage other people to consider fostering because there are lots of kids out there who need good homes. All you need to do is care."
As well as fostering, Miriam is also a community campaigner who works alongside the police to combat drugs.
Edwina Harrison, chief officer for children and young people’s social care at Leeds City Council, said:
''It is an honour to work with Miriam because she is such a caring person. Her kindness has helped bring many children and young people through some difficult and tough times. I'm delighted to add my congratulations to the many she is receiving right now!''
