Storytelling makes reading fun for foster families in Northern Ireland

30 October 2007

Foster families in Northern Ireland have been provided with the chance to make reading fun for all the family. The Fostering Network have been awarded a grant from The Roald Dahl Foundation to support a project aimed at improving the literacy levels of children in foster care, from which our members in Northern Ireland will benefit.

Research demonstrates that educational outcomes for children in foster care are poor in comparison to their peers, however children who engage with books and reading outside school often perform better. The Telling My Story project aims to encourage foster carers to read with their children helping to develop vocabulary and speaking and listening skills. The process also provides a valuable opportunity for foster carers and all the family to have fun together.

Telling My Story will hold a storytelling event in Belfast 2 November 2007 giving foster carers, fostered children and sons and daughters of foster carers the chance to get involved in storytelling workshops held by the successful Belfast storyteller Liz Weir, performer Fra Gunn and Belfast librarian Pat Jordan. This event is open to all foster carers - the story telling event and lunch are free.

For more information on the storytelling event contact Christina Donnelly on 028 9070 5056 or christina.donnelly@fostering.net.
