24 June 2008

Staff and supporters of the Fostering Network who abseiled down Belfast's Europa hotelStaff and supporters of leading fostering charity the Fostering Network abseiled down the Europa Hotel in Belfast city centre on Saturday 21 June in an effort to raise funds to help support children in foster care in Northern Ireland.

An intrepid team of 15 made up of foster carers, care experienced young people and sons and daughters of foster carers really enjoyed the challenge of scaling the 13-storey Europa Hotel at 51 metres high.

One team member Melissa Mc Kenna marked her 25th birthday with this challenge:
“I think this birthday is one to remember. A great challenge which I must admit was terrifying but I wanted to do something different for a special charity on my birthday.”

Kate Lewis, director of the Fostering Network Northern Ireland, said: “This event is a great opportunity to increase public awareness about fostering and raise vital funds for an extremely worthy cause. We have a great team of participants taking part and I congratulate them all for being so brave!”

One care leaver who took on the challenge for the second time is 19 year-old Rachel Graham from Carrickfergus. She said: “I really enjoy taking on challenges like this, and to do it in aid of a charity which has done so much to help my foster carers makes it all the more worthwhile.”

Participants raised over £1000 for the Fostering Network - well done!
